Wednesday, and Samsung is about to announce its Galaxy Note 10 phone , a successor to the Galaxy Note 9. The power-oriented line is usually the best Samsung has to offer, but depending on what Samsung wins – and how much it costs – the Note 9 can also benefit from speeding attention.

Awesome year for the Note line. While Samsung is expected to showcase the phone with a new and improved design, S Pen stylus and internal features, the Note 10 also has surrounded by more competition than ever before , much of it comes from Samsung. There are four Galaxy S10 phones, including a variety of 5G and Galaxy Fold which Samsung screen problems have now been fixed and which is scheduled to sell in September .

If the The Galaxy Note 10 is of considerable interest to Note phones , and Samsung, carriers, and retailers are dropping the Note 9 price, the 2018 device may earn additional sales, especially if potential fenced-in customers decide it is better to save a hundred dollars than invest in Samsung’s next big thing.

Galaxy Note: The original big phone that changed it all

We will be reporting Samsung specs that are going to make us note in our Note 10, but the Note 9 was a great device in itself. Of course, we felt that Samsung was holding back some subtle moments that turn the phone from good to great or great to fantastic, but overall, we would happily use the Note 9 to do everything from navigation (hello, less blurry screen) to writing reminders in the conference room or on the go.

Update, August 7, 2019: The following is a CNET Galaxy Note 9 review, originally published on March 8, 2018 and last updated on August 24, 2018.

I picked up the Galaxy Note 9, put out the S Pen stylus, and started writing on the black screen with dull digital ink. It amazed me that using this phone is more fun than using your phone. When I use the Note 9, I feel inspired to write, draw, take accurate screenshots with a tool, take selfie pictures with a remote S Pen shutter, and playfully comment on photos to send to friends.

But Note 9 is not just a toy. It’s as powerful as hell, with a 6.4-inch screen, a 4,000mAh battery, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and 128GB or a whopping 512GB (!!!) built-in storage, plus a microSD card if you want more, more, more.

Still, the tricky question at the heart of all this is that you are knocking on gray matter: is the power and entertainment of Samsung’s new Samsung Note 9 worth $ 1000 of your hard-earned money? (That’s £ 899 and $ 1,499 – or $ 1,250, $ 1,099 and $ 1,799 for the 512GB version.) That’s the same question Apple fans have been asking themselves since iPhone X first hit the $ 1,000 mark last year.

For Android fans who want the best, the answer is yes.

The Galaxy Note 9 looks great from every angle.

The Galaxy Note 9’s features are top-notch. It’s an all-in-one phone, one of the absolute best you can buy with All The Things. It will take you over the next two to three years with great photos, Android updates and all that jazz.

And although the price is extremely high compared to last year’s Note 8 (unless you live in Australia; in which case it costs the same), stocks, pre-savings and future vacation offers can cut hundreds of expenses on the Note 9, making it much more affordable “.

Galaxy Note 9 looks stunning in these photos

So, is there a reason not get a Note? Yes. For starters, there is not a certain “wow” factor. Apart from the higher capacity of the battery and dual storage, not everything is much different from the level Galaxy S9 Plus or really with Galaxy Note 8 before it.

Bonkers storage is good, but you can also buy a cheaper phone and use up less memory than the cost of the new Note 9 – phones with this variant less, but Galaxy S9 and the S9 Plus is. And while the Note 9’s battery life will take you from one morning to the next night for a single charge, is the 300 cappuccino really worth it? Can you find two hours a day to charge 0 to 100 percent? And 15 minutes extra if you need emergency help?

As for the new cool S Pen Note Bluetooth style – Bluetooth turns it into a remote control, but it has to be used in everyday life.

We have no rumors on the screen of fingerprint reading, such as some other Android phones or 3D front camera, like iPhone X and Oppo Find X ($ 678 on Amazon) . And the Note 9 can’t lock in on the insanely high speeds of 5G data transmission that networks will boil in 2019. This phone feels like Samsung is holding back next year Galaxy S10 .

The Note 9’s S Pen gets a Bluetooth antenna for a brain.

So yes, buy the Galaxy Note 9 if you are upgrading from an older phone today and you want to have the strongest, most powerful, big screen Android phone out there. But if your current phone is in good shape and you don’t care about two clicks on the S Pen stylus, then wait. Google iPhone 2018 and Pixel 3 Google ($ 900 on Amazon) come weeks, not months, and next spring the Galaxy S10 should help get started larger revolution with 5G.

Read the new Note 9 features and compare them with competitors such as the iPhone X. Here are the features of the Galaxy Note 9 compared to the Galaxy S9, S9 Plus and Note 8 .

Note 9 highlights

  • Battery life is strong with real tests. I will continue to monitor the long downpour.
  • The new Bluetooth features of the S Pen stylus work as advertised.
  • As a natural notes lover, I love being able to record things. I’ve created so many lists to pin on a lock screen.
  • I checked both blue and purple, and the bold colors of the Note 9 stand out. It is also sold worldwide in black and metallic copper.

Every Note phone (except the recalled Note 7) from the very beginning.

Note 9 low points

  • You will not be able to write or draw to the edge of the screen unless the S Pen falls off the curved sides.
  • The fingerprint scanner is too close to the camera array. Why hasn’t Samsung figured out the best placement yet?
  • The new Note 9 AI camera tool works slower than I would like to define scenes and optimize settings for better shooting.
  • Bixby 2.0 is expanded, but the button on the Note 9’s left side still only maps to Bixby, as it does with the Galaxy S8 and newer.
  • If you write S Pen (yellow, purple or copper) on your phone screen, any notes you save will be stored in a hard-to-read colored ink.

Where and how to buy the Galaxy Note 9

You can now order the Galaxy Note 9. The phone typically ships on August 24th. Keep track of business deals, promotions and package gifts. These values may vary by region.

Here’s everything you need to know about acquiring the Galaxy Note 9 in the US.

The Galaxy Note 9 looks smooth and so familiar

I used the Galaxy Note 9 in the ocean blue and lavender purple colors I like. This handset is a classic modern Samsung, with deep color and gloss, glossy finish that effortlessly picks up prints and sophisticated curved edges. This is a great device, even if the Note’s design lacks freshness.

The Galaxy Note 9 is the only Galaxy phone to pack a digital pen.

Angela Lang

That’s because the 83 percent screen-to-body ratio of the phone (18.5: 9) has hardly changed compared to last year’s Note 8. There are a few minor exceptions, including the fingerprint reader, which is now just below the camera module, and a little larger S Pen holder for slightly larger S Pen.

I found that the tall, narrow Note 9 was simple enough to hold and use in smaller hands, but I really had to hammer myself to get on this fingerprint scanner. Those who have bigger hands will have more luck, but the target may be a little small. It’s a good idea to unlock your phone interchangeably with a rainbow scanner (both are fairly secure for mobile payments).

Not one colleague or friend has mentioned that the high Note 9 threatens to fall out of my back pocket. I usually carry it there when it doesn’t come in the pocket of my wallet.

I also inadvertently pressed the Bixby Voice button to the left of the phone calling the Samsung Assistant version and Samsung’s Siri Apple. It’s a minor design problem, but still.

Who wouldn’t want a headphone jack?

The new Galaxy S S Pen Galaxy picks up on Bluetooth tricks

The new S Pen is by far not the best feature of the Galaxy Note 9. You can still write, draw, move, and create live messages. But now the S Pen button can take different actions: You can open the camera app, expand the camera, and take pictures in just a few clicks. Of all the things you can do with the S Pen, I was most impressed.

The pen also allows you to manage your presentation – you can move slides, play or rewind songs in a music player, and drag and drop photos into a slideshow gallery. New skills rely on low-energy Bluetooth (there is an antenna in the antenna), and you can customize the actions in a special settings menu. Your capabilities are limited at the moment, but Samsung wants to bring in other third-party application developers.

Galaxy Note 9: 16 hidden features on Samsung’s best phone

The S Pen remote control is said to be 30 feet away from the phone, but I was still taking photos 100 feet away. The waiting time is 200 clicks or 30 minutes, and the S Pen inductively charges in less than a minute, since you reinsert the stylus into the holster.

Your phone will alert you if you have been sitting idle for too long. If you lose the tool, you will have to buy a replacement – there is no Find my S Pen function.

Here’s another fun addiction: Note 9 will now color your pen when you record notes on a black lock screen (a function called Screen Reminder). So it’s yellow, purple, copper and white (for the black version). You can also switch to white ink if you like. However, at the moment, why can’t you choose any color you like?

Note 9 new AI camera features

Unfortunately, Samsung’s new AI camera software for its dual 12MP cameras is nothing to go by.

AI software analyzes the scene and quickly detects whether you are shooting a flower, food, dog, human or something else entirely. There are 20 options, including snowflakes, cityscapes, fire – you get it. The camera then optimizes white balance, saturation, and contrast to make the photos pop.

Food mode pops on automatically.

Angela Lang

It works great and you will see some big differences when you take your photo lunch on Instagram. But the Scene Optimizer has often been hit and you can’t turn down suggestions with your finger as much as possible on Huawei P20 Pro . It is either on or off.

Samsung is following the industry with AI camera software. But others got there first, so this feels like a minimal addition to what is essentially an addition to the S9 Plus cameras. It’s hardly worth calling.

Yes, you can draw with it, too.

Sarah Tew

Another tiny feature is the detection of flaws. If someone blinks an eye or moves, or the lens is dim or too much illumination gets in the way of a clean shot, a dialog box pops up immediately after taking a picture, prompting you to take the shot again.

In addition to these software add-ons, the Note 9 retains the main camera lens of the S9, which automatically changes the aperture when the need for low light shooting is detected. (Samsung calls this dual aperture.) There is also portrait mode and an 8MP front-facing camera for your selfies. The photos from both are very good, though any movement in low light can cause unwanted blur.

Battery life, internal speed, speakers

The battery life was tremendously stunning in the Galaxy Note 9. Sometimes, for whatever reason, the phone may not always match the battery power. This one does. The American version of the Note 9 lasted an average of 19 hours 20 minutes Video Drain Test on CNET , which includes five tests so far with two different devices.

For chipset sockets, our Note 9 test running on Samsung’s own Exynos 9810 processor is still ongoing. So far, we’ve spent 20 hours in our battery discharge test.

In real-world observation, the Note 9 holds its own, and I am still not nervous that the phone will die from me if I get late. I will continue to monitor my daily battery usage over the coming weeks.

Angela Lang

Keep in mind that all batteries are most effective when you start using your device and then discharge faster (they won’t last as long as it takes). It’s not perfect, but it will be the way to go until the battery technology changes dramatically. Even so, with the Note 9 you start off pretty well.

Internal speed is just as fast on benchmarks and real-world usage as other phones using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset. PUBG – and Fortnite-playing participate in system resources. We noticed that the Note 9 didn’t get as hot as the Galaxy S9 when playing Fortnite, and you won’t notice a lag when you use your phone.

One final exclamation point goes to the Note 9 volume speakers (which are the same) and as loud as the the ones on the Galaxy S9 . Just remember not to close the bottom speaker if you hold the phone to your ear.
