OnePlus 5T specification

The Good The OnePlus 5T has a larger screen and its camera takes photos with less light than 5. Its several software settings are useful in small ways.

The Bad Unlocking your phone’s face prevents you from making payments, and the digital zoom does not take a step back. There is no extended storage and this is not rated for water resistance.

The Bottom Line The OnePlus 5T is a great, affordable phone for new buyers, despite only a slight change from the OnePlus 5.

OnePlus did it again. Its latest phone, the OnePlus 5T, combines the right high-end handset with the right price software, making it one of the best phones to buy anywhere. It remains one of those rare devices that can carry phones with slightly lower performance and higher price tags, such as the Galaxy Note 8 ($ 464 on Amazon) and LG V30 ($ 280 on Amazon) . The price-to-price ratio is the reason why the 5T, like the latest OnePlus phones before it, is one of the best mid-range phones you can buy and have won the CNET Editor’s Choice Award.

Of course, this is not perfect – no phone. One of the largest warts of the OnePlus 5T is that it is just a gradual jump from the OnePlus 5 that we saw just five months ago. So, while 5T is truly an exciting new customer, anyone who already owns the OnePlus 5 can join me in the big leverage.

In fact, the owners of OnePlus 5 have the right to be annoyed that their phone is now “old news”. (And OnePlus no longer sells 5, so unless you buy it through another channel, this is your only option.)

OnePlus 5T: Bigger screen, same design

The 5T stores most of the interior equipment 5, including the processor, battery and headphone jack, which is so dangerous these days. But the most changed were the screen and the camera. The 6-inch 6-inch AMOLED 5T display now takes up most of the phone’s face, and OnePlus has replaced a 20-megapixel telephoto lens on a dual camera, replacing it with a low-light lens.

Gradual updates quickly became OnePlus. In just four years, this Chinese brand has exploded hot global cult following , which is based on the reduction of more expensive competition. And while the OnePlus 5T isn’t as cheap as the first OnePlus flagship in 2014 (when it was $ 299, or about £ 180 and $ 320), it’s still available.

(However, keep in mind that the OnePlus 5T was launched during the holidays, with the most competitive retail months and season in the US and other places. All the best phones of the year during this time are subject to fluctuations in sales and discounts. And many old, but You can still get great flagship phones at even greater discounts, sometimes even with two-on-one deals. OnePlus 5T vs OnePlus 5: What’s the difference?

A few things, but not a lot. Here are the great ones:

Larger display

The most noticeable and, in fact, the difference that is envious of the OnePlus 5 and 5T is the larger 5T display, which now measures 6 inches instead of 5.5. Because the frames are thinner, the physical size of the 5T remains relatively the same. On paper it’s a few millimeters taller and thicker, and 0.3 ounces (9 grams) heavier, but I didn’t notice a difference in my hand.

With the new size, the display resolution is still sharp (pixels per inch are stable at 401 pylons), but the aspect ratio has changed from 16: 9 to 18: 9, the same ratio you see inSamsung Galaxy S8 ($ 500 on best purchase) and the S8 Plus, LG V30 and G6, andGoogle Pixel 2 XL ($ 650 on Amazon) . Some argue that this ratio offers a better and more comfortable viewing experience. But I like it because it gives you more canvas to do all the usual things you do on the phone.

Unlocking your face is new, but not safe

The iPhone X ($ 899 on Amazon) made your face unlock with Face ID, which sprays your kitchen with harmless infrared rays to reflect your features and prove you are.

But not all face unlockers are created equally, and the OnePlus 5T recognizes that its new feature is not all that secure – at least not secure enough for mobile payments. Samsung’s Galaxy S8, S8 Plus and Note 8 also feature a face unlock, and they’re not secure enough to make purchases through Samsung Pay.

However, unlocking your face gives you another way to unlock your phone and ease some of the iPhone X FOMO. It works extremely fast and recognizes over 100 face IDs to unlock the phone, OnePlus reports. (Read more: How to set face unlock on OnePlus 5T .)

This function worked when I wore sunglasses and sunglasses, and it was able to distinguish my face in real life by printing 8.5×11 inches. It’s a useful time-saving method for unlocking your phone, but that’s about it. Ck.

A better low-light camera with optical zoom

OnePlus has made some interesting changes to the dual camera setup. There is still a 16-megapixel main camera, but what used to be a 20-megapixel telephoto lens is a lens designed for better low-light shots.

For camera aficionados, this secondary lens has the same focal length as the main camera, meaning you can still take bokeh-style portrait photos without snapping them (what OnePlus 5 did ). But as OnePlus enlarges the aperture on the second lens, night and low light photos look much more detailed. The downside is that the telephoto or “optical” zoom is gone, so all the zooming on the phone will be done digitally.

Usually I don’t increase the large number of shots for everyday shots, but the enlarged photos on the 5T look noticeably more blurry and crisp than the OnePlus 5. Although the good news is that low-light photos are definitely clearer, brighter and more detailed. Switching from teleworking is a trade-off, and it would be nice if OnePlus was able to solve both problems, but I prefer to have better low-light capabilities at the end of the day.

Apart from these two points, the quality of photos between 5T and 5 is relatively the same. Pictures are bright and bright, and portraits look sleek – although the blurred effect can have fuzzy outlines. (For more on photo quality, check out the OnePlus 5’s CNET photo gallery and stay up-to-date with 5T shots.)

But one thing has changed in the five months since OnePlus 5’s release, and it’s the Pixel 2 launch ($ 500 on Amazon) . The Pixel 2 camera is ahead of the OnePlus 5T in sharpness and focus; low light (due to OIS / EIS camera settings); and portrait mode, even though we only have one lens Given the more competitive landscape today, I’m not as passionate about the OnePlus 5T as it was before, despite the fact that it’s objectively better than the 5 overall.

The camera still has advanced Pro mode for advanced editing while shooting, as well as EIS, electronic image stabilization for video recording.

More information on OnePlus 5T

  • The fingerprint scanner that used to be under the display now sits on the back, below the camera. Buttons for the back, home and latest programs are now integrated into the screen, not under it.
  • If you have two different accounts for apps like Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter (maybe one for work and another for personal), you can also run them on your phone by adding apps in parallel.
  • The gallery application can upload photos you have taken on the map. Just be sure to include geotags for your photos. Pretty sophisticated visuals if you’re an experienced traveler.
  • The phone runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat and plans to get Android 8.0 Oreo early next year.

OnePlus 5T vs OnePlus 5: What is it?

Almost all. Here is what you store.

Not waterproof

Like most phones, the OnePlus 5T can withstand a few drops and drops of water that you may accidentally encounter on a rainy day. But OnePlus wasn’t forced to waterproof the 5T this time, and the phone didn’t get an IP rating. So do not cover your phone under water for any appreciable amount of time and hope that it continues to poke perfectly.

Don’t worry, there’s still a headphone jack at the bottom.

Andrew Hoyle

No extension

This may be the face value for iPhone owners, but many (I think not all) Android phones offer memory extensions with a MicroSD card. Like the previous 5, you won’t find it here.

GSM carriers only

If you’re on a network that uses CDMA-technology (in the US, that’s Verizon and Sprint customers), you still won’t be able to use the OnePlus 5T. The phone is only compatible with GSM carries like AT&T and T-Mobile in the US.

Still fast with a long battery life

Although the Snapdragon 835 OnePlus 5T chipset is the same as the 5, it surprisingly performed better on all the tests I performed. This means that it still comfortably outperforms the Galaxy S8 and LG G6, as well as the newer Pixel 2 XL. However, in everyday use you will not notice a big difference. The 5 was already a fast phone, and launching apps, launching the camera and keyholeing felt just as fast.

If you are wondering why I used landmarks other than our usual set of programs at this time, it’s because OnePlus is known to intentionally roll over landmarks, tweaking its core processors to maximize results for specific tests, such as Antutu v6.2.7 and Geekbench 4 Optimizing metrics is not new, but it can be misleading. So, we used benchmarks based on browser, Octane 2.0 and JetStream 1.1.

As for the battery, the OnePlus 5T still has a long running time, despite its higher performance. During our drainage test for continuous video playback in airplane mode, the phone took an average of 17 hours and 14 minutes. Meanwhile, the OnePlus 5 runs an average of 17 hours and 50 minutes. Although the 5T shaves for a few minutes, the battery remains impressive. You can also charge your phone very quickly with OnePlus’ Dash charging, but there is no wireless charging.

If you get the OnePlus 5T, if …

  • Already own the OnePlus 5: Definitely not. Sure, it’s annoying to miss out on the bigger screen but that’s pretty much it. Plus you didn’t spend an extra $20. That’s like… two lunches (or one lunch here in San Francisco).
  • Already wanted to buy the OnePlus 5: Definitely yes. Because both phones are great and the OnePlus 5 is sold out on the company’s website.
  • Want a phone in this price range: Yes. At $499 for the 64GB model, we liked it better than other phones in its price range like the Motorola Moto Z2 Play ( $383 at Amazon ) . It has a faster processor and the battery lasts just as long.
  • Are looking for a high-end phone: Depends. The phone is still a solid value (despite being pricier than when the first OnePlus phone was released). And if you’re on a budget, I prefer it over the Galaxy S8 and LG G6. It doesn’t have as many features, but you’ll be saving money and getting a comparable phone to boot. But if you want a better camera, the Pixel 2 is the phone to get. It doesn’t exert any of the same screen issues as its bigger counterpart (the Pixel 2 XL) and has a superior camera than the OnePlus 5T.
