Editors’ note: Because of an oversight on our part, the original scores for Design, Features, and the overall score for the NEC Multisync PA271W were wrong. Design has changed from 8 to 9; features from 8 to 6; and the overall score from 8.7 to 8.8. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

$ 1649! Yes, I just want to drop the price as soon as I can. If you’re a professional graphic artist and don’t buy the NEC MultiSync PA271W, its price may have scared you. Still here? FINE. Since you didn’t go to another review, I think you like the price. If so, NEC is the most efficient monitor we’ve tested, and it has the funniest reliable on-screen display we’ve ever seen. Its color reproduction is flawless and has virtually no backlight.

Apart from the price, its other limitation is the lack of connectivity options, especially when compared to the similarly productive and lower-priced Dell UltraSharp U2711. Although the NEC monitor is generally better, the performance of the Dell U2711 is in the same echelon and has many connectivity options at a lower cost. However, professional users will appreciate the incredibly detailed NEC MultiSync PA271W screen display.

Design and features
27-inch NEC MultiSync PA271W is a monitor dispute. Although it has the same screen size as the Dell UltraSharp U2711, it is 30 pounds 7 pounds heavier than the Dell UltraSharp U2711. The dark gray panel is 3.5 inches thick, its base is 0.8 inches wide, and the footboard is 12.5 inches wide by 9.2 inches wide. The PA271W includes a full range of adjustable ergonomic options. The height of the screen can be adjusted by 5.75 inches and is 0.75 and 6.5 inches from the desktop when it is at the lowest and highest points, respectively. The panel rotates left and right 45 degrees and rotates 90 degrees to the right. The panel also tilts back about 30 degrees. At the top of the panel, at the back, the NEC has a handle for carrying the monitor. Some users will not use the pen given the considerable weight of the display; however, if you are actually strong enough to carry it, it makes it much easier to move. In addition, with its large weight and wide footrest, there is not much chance of collecting a display.

The monitor screen has several buttons aligned along the bottom right of the panel. Buttons include Menu, Input, PIP, Right and Left buttons, and Up and Down buttons. To the left of the array is a blue (or green, depending on your preference) LED, power button, and ambient light sensor. Pressing the Menu button displays screen labels aligned with each button of the array, as well as a user interface window that appears at the bottom center of the screen.

The interface has controls for brightness, black level, sharpness, eco mode switch, and aspect ratio, which allows you to adjust the screen up, down, left and right a few centimeters. As a bonus, the brightness set includes square-meter candelas that attempt to estimate the current brightness output. The tool is mostly accurate, but the higher you adjust the brightness, the less accurate the reading becomes. The display also has a fairly robust carbon footprint interface that includes a dollar estimate – with five additional currency options – your current monitor power consumption is worth it.

The monitor has five presets, including Adobe RGB, sRGB, High Bright, Full and DCI. With each preset, you can also adjust the color temperature from 3,000 K to a maximum of 15,000 K. In addition to the red, yellow, and green color settings, the screen also lets you change the colors blue, blue and purple.

The NEC MultiSync PA271W also includes an advanced menu that gives you even more control over its image settings. Some of these include adjusting the RGB concentration in specific areas of the screen, as well as the ability to fine tune uniformity.

Monitor connection options include two DVI ports, DisplayPort, an S-video port, and two input and two USB ports. However, we are disappointed to see that the NEC does not have an HDMI port, and the number of connections the monitor is approaching is comparable to the many ports that the U2711 has.

Pressing the PIP button will bring up an additional small screen built into the home screen and display a signal from the second DVI port.

We tested the NEC MultiSync PA271W through its DVI input connected to a Windows Vista PC. The display shows a composite score of 98 on CNET ‘DisplayMate labs based on performance tests; tying the U2711 to the highest rating we have ever seen. The NEC MultiSync PA271W has accurate color reproduction without showing color tint issues in our color-tracking test. In our test, the PA271W black level strikingly displayed dark gray to level two, two levels higher than true black. Finally, the PA271W struck us with its homogeneity; including showing it in our dark screen test, which checks for bleeding in the backlight or opacity. The NEC showed only the slightest hint of haze because its screen remained black, with only a slight hint of light during this test.

We didn’t see any color problems with the black text on the white background in the text, and the fonts were clearly visible up to 6.8 pixels.

We tested the NEC MultiSync PA271W using the Blu-ray version of Avatar. The NEC colors were as accurate as the Dell U2711, with no sign of shade problems. In addition, its colors appeared enough to look spectacular and pleasing to the eye, but not enough to feel oversaturated, and its blacks were deep without losing much of the dark details in the dark scenes.

Through our deep familiarity with World of Warcraft, it remains the best tool we can use to judge color quality and game brightness. We tested the games in high brightness mode and found that the NEC displayed accurate and vivid colors. World of Warcraft looks just as good on the NEC as on the Dell U2711, with a full color that doesn’t oversaturate the image.

We looked at some of the photos in the Adobe RGB and sRGB presets and noticed that, although the photos in both presets had the exact color, the Adobe RGB looked more natural and appropriate. We also looked at the photos on the Dell U2711 in its pre-installed Adobe RGB software and saw a slightly fuller color on the NEC than Dell.

Viewing angle
The optimum viewing angle for the monitor is usually directly in front, about a quarter of the screen down from the top. At this angle, you are viewing the colors as intended by the manufacturer. Most monitors are not considered in any other angle. The image quality at sub-optimal angle depends on the type of panel. Most monitors use TN panels that are too bright or too dark on parts of the screen when not viewed from optimal angles. On the other hand, IPS panels typically show only minimal color shifts with an angle change. The NEC MultiSync PA271W has an IPS panel, and when viewed from the side, we perceived the screen to be approximately 15 inches from the center; more than twice the viewing angle than a typical TN panel.

Recommended settings and usage
For general use and when playing games, we found that NEC High Bright was the most suitable for use. For movies, it’s best to use its pre-installed DCI, and for photo editing, it’s best Adobe RGB.

As with most IPS-based monitors, NEC focuses its MultiSync PA271W mostly on professional use when accurate color reproduction is required; however, the monitor is also great for watching movies, playing games and for public use.

Power consumption
Not surprisingly, given its large screen and focus on professional performance, the NEC MultiSync PA271W uses high power and has a very high default / power factor of 87.79W compared to 93.72W of the U2711 on the same test. Delta monitor power consumption was much closer in our sleep / standby test with the NEC 1.17W and the Dell U2711 – 1.19W. Based on our formula, the NEC MultiSync PA271W will cost a low $ 27 per year for energy, compared to the cost of the U2711 by $ 28.78 per year.
