The Good The HP Photosmart 5510 multifunction printer occupies minimum space on your desktop and features an intuitive touch screen with virtual buttons that illuminate to eliminate clutter.
The Bad Photosmart 5510 does not support HP print-oriented web applications, and competing printers offer more versatility with manual two-sided printing and increased paper input.
The Bottom Line The HP Photosmart 5510 All-In-One printer delivers reliable performance with excellent performance and speed tests, but fails. For people who need more than just speeds and channels, I prefer the Epson Stylus NX430.
The 99-inch HP Photosmart 5510 e-All-in-One registers competitive print speeds and overall image quality, but I prefer Epson Stylus NX430 as it offers more features such as manual duplexing and larger sheet capacity, which means you won’t be able to fill the paper often. For homes and offices that are serious about printing, the $ 99 Epson NX430 offers HP-like performance with more versatile features that give it a higher score.
Design and features
The Photosmart 5510 combines the functionality of a low-profile chassis printer, scanner, and copier with matte black to match HP’s modern aesthetic design. It measures 17.2 inches by 5.8 inches in height and 12.8 inches wide, so it won’t take up your entire desktop as a more full featured feature. The Epson Stylus NX430 is still the smallest all-in-one printer, but it’s 2 inches shorter.
HP has expanded its touch screen trend to 5510 with a 2.4-inch color LCD located to the left of the device. Most controls are located on the right side of the virtual buttons, which help navigate and select the screen. In addition, HP makes choosing the right buttons a little easier, just highlighting the options you need for each function, unlike other panels that ask you to select a list of all available icons.
Not surprisingly, the $ 100 device does not come with an optional pricing line setting, so you won’t see features such as an automatic document feeder or duplex duplexer. In fact, the driver included on the installation disc does not even have the option of manual duplex printing – a must-have for anyone interested in saving money on supplies or saving the environment.
The paper input and output trays are located at the bottom of the machine, although a minimum paper capacity of 80 sheets can frustrate you if you are a high-frequency printer. Anyone who does not print random e-mails or airline tickets will likely prefer the extra 20 sheets that can be placed on the Epson Stylus NX430.
In addition to direct USB connectivity (like most vendors, HP does not include a USB cable with a printer), you can set up Photosmart 5510 on your network via Wi-Fi, which also allows Apple users to make an easy connection via AirPrint on a compatible iOS device. Using AirPrint, you can print a photo from your iPhoto library simply by selecting a connected printer and clicking Print.
I checked the Wi-Fi connection process and found it easy to navigate through the initial setup screens using the instructions on the driver disc. All you need to do is quickly enter your network user name and password on the QWERTY virtual keyboard, and the printer must be plugged in immediately. Poppies and PCs in the CNET lab were able to see the printer without having to install additional software.
In addition to the Apple AirPrint, the 5510 also has HP ePrint technology that lets you send tasks from any connected device to the printer using a uniquely assigned email address. You can even go through the settings and change the email address to an easier tag to give out to friends and relatives you consider responsible enough to take control of your printer – you can take ownership of it in Control Panel (Wireless> Web Services > Display Email), and it’s easy to set up, but it has some limitations. For one, the printer must be on and connected to your network. On the other hand, it can’t print webpages, though you can simply copy and paste text into a document as a solution.
Because it’s a $ 99 model, HP is refusing to register a printer in the ePrintCenter App Store online. The units above in the Photosmart and Officejet line-up include the ability to download a suite of applications designed to maximize workflow and offer bite-size entertainment for easy printing directly through the display, but such applications require more screen real estate to raise the price well above the $ 100 mark.
The standard tablet scanner / copier measures 8.5 inches by 11.7 inches, but I was disappointed to find that the hardware did not provide the hinge that may be necessary to scan thicker media such as books and multi-page documents. Even though its resolution is 2400 dpi, it scans and copies documents that look crisp and clear, and this model can also send scans directly to a PC or memory card.
When tested in the lab, the HP Photosmart 5510 printer registered results slightly faster than the average for multifunction devices at a price of $ 100. It displaced just over five pages of monochrome text, two pages of color graphics, and about two and a half PowerPoint slides in a minute. These speeds lagged behind the performance of the Epson Stylus NX430, the best performer in this category, but ahead of MFP with a similar price as Canon Pixma MX410 . He also clearly rethought the entry level, two-tank MFP HP Deskjet 3050 , which shows the performance you get as you increase your HP Photosmart line.

The speed of Photosmart 5510 does not impair quality. It came out with clear dark black text that clearly outperformed the NX430’s text quality. Color graphics and photos showed accurate colors, although I found the copies of the photos to be a bit blurred. For this reason, I recommend simply printing a photo from its digital source if you need a different copy.
Service and support
HP supports Photosmart 5510 with a standard one-year warranty, which includes 24-7 free phone support and live web chat on weekdays. The HP Web site also contains downloadable drivers, software and manuals; e-mail technical support; FAQ; and troubleshooting guide. You can return the item within 21 days after delivery.
The HP Photosmart 5510 is a great buy if you can buy it for less than $ 100 retail. Among the price competition of HP, the Epson Stylus NX430 is the preferred option, which quickly outputs pages with the added benefits of manual duplexing and a larger paper tray. If you have the choice of both at the same price, your money is better spent on the Epson Stylus NX430.
