The HP Officejet 6500A Plus is a vanilla, more powerful versionOfficejet 6500A. It adds Wi-Fi support and a duplex version that lets you automatically print from two sides of the page. The best part is that it only costs you extra, since this printer can be purchased online from HP for £ 100.

Chunky design

The 6500A Plus looks identical to the sibling, so it’s similar to this model in the large and bulky chassis. At 409mm tall, it’s usually tall, and its size is also big at 476x258mm, so it takes up a lot of space in a mid-sized home office. However, the glossy black finish makes it more stylish than your mid-range printer.

On the sloping front panel, you’ll find a 6cm touch screen, as well as a digital touchpad for dialing fax numbers. The touch screen really helps make the printer easy to use, especially when you’re setting it up for Wi-Fi or wanting to quickly change the number of copies.

At the top of the scanner cover is an automatic document feeder that allows you to quickly copy or send fax pages to multiple pages, and a 250-sheet placement device is located at the bottom of the printer. You’ll also find a memory card reader that supports Memory Stick Duo, MMC, SD, and XD cards, but unfortunately the printer lacks a PictBridge USB port.

Simple set-up

Getting started and launching the 6500A Plus is very easy, thanks in large part to the touch screen, which walks you through the process with clear instructions and convenient animations. You can choose to connect the printer to your PC directly via USB, or connect it to the network using an Ethernet or Wi-Fi cable instead.

It is best to use one of the network options, as you can then use the printer’s web features. This includes HP ePrint support, which configures the printer to your own unique email address, so you can email documents and photos from any device connected to the Internet anywhere in the world. You can also use this email address to sign up for a printer with the new Google Cloud Printing service.

In addition, the 6500A Plus also supports HP Web applications, giving you quick access to online content such as Yahoo and Reuters news services or Disney and DreamWorks prints, so you can print news stories or coloring books for kids.

Scanning and copying

The automatic document feeder on the printer can process up to 35 sheets at a time and allows you to copy or send fax pages to many pages without the hassle of manually placing each sheet on the glass surface of the scanner.

The scanner has a resolution of 4800dpi and delivers impressive quality results. The details in the scan remain clear and sharp, and the color accuracy is also good. The printer is also fast enough when it comes to photocopying. It copied our test black and white sheet in 14 seconds, which is faster than most other multifunction jet models. Speed, quality and cost

The 6500A Plus has a fairly high tempo when it comes to print speed. We completed our 10-page text document in a quick 1 minute 15 seconds, and it took 2 minutes 24 seconds and 2 minutes 53 seconds to print our business presentation to create our graphical test. These times put it out there with the best multifunction models, which is impressive given the low price.

Although not as fast when it comes to duplex printing. It took 3 minutes 40 seconds to print the five double-sided pages of our text document, which is about a minute longer than the other recent test models we tested. Part of the problem is that it pauses for 17 seconds after printing on the first page for the ink to dry, which obviously has a negative effect on overall speed.

Although it is designed primarily for business use, the 6500A Plus does really well with photo printing, and it took only 37 seconds to produce our 4×6-inch image. Quality suited many consumer models thanks to bold colors and no of any serious color.

In fact, the overall print quality is impressive. The text is dark and dense, with very little feathers or bleeding. Our business presentation is also printed in bold color and without any streaks you often see on cheap jet models.

The 6500A Plus will also be cheap to run for a longer period. Printing a black and white page of text costs only 2p, while the color sheet comes in at a very reasonable 4p. Both of these costs are one of the lowest you will find in a multifunction streaming model.

Although double-sided printing is on a slow slide, the 6500A Plus is a great performer in almost any other area. Add to that it’s packed with features and doesn’t cost much to work with, and you have a seriously impressive printer, especially given the bargain basement price.
