Is Google Pixel 4 safe for home

The Good The dual rear Pixel 4 cameras take vivid photos, and the high speed refresh of the display makes the navigation silky smooth. The phone will get a quick software update and its face unlock works very fast.

The Bad The phone does not have headphones, it does not have the ability to expand storage, and its battery power is mediocre.

The Bottom Line The Pixel 4 has one of the best cameras around, but it is expensive considering the limited storage capacity. If you want more memory and a comparable camera, think of the OnePlus 7T or Galaxy S10 or Pixel 3, which is only $ 500 right now.

With Pixel 4, Google has put together a great camera that is software-enhanced. The first telephoto lens of the company is a class of its class (not just our word is taken: here 24 photos taken with Pixel 4 ). This makes portraiture a breeze, and it is no longer possible to zoom in on distant objects and take a decent photo. I was unable to test the new camera mode for photographing the stars – they were not visible in the area I was testing.

But with all the camera brightness, the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL (these phones are almost identical except for size and battery) are expensive, considering the amount of storage : The Pixel 4 starts at $ 800 (£ 669, $ 1,049), while the Pixel 4 XL costs $ 900 (£ 829, $ 1,279). They only come with 64GB at these prices, without the possibility of expansion. If you want 128GB, you’ll need to spend another $ 100.

However, other premium phones are placed in the same price range. But the iPhone 11 ($ 870 at Walmart) , which also has dual rear cameras and no extended storage, starts at $ 699 (£ 729, $ 1,199) at 64GB – $ 100 less than the Pixel 4 – and $ 150 cheaper at 128GB. The Galaxy S10 it costs $ 900 (£ 799, $ 1,349), but has extended storage and $ 950 Note 10 (£ 899, $ 1,499) with no expandable storage, at least 256 GB onboard.

As for the available Android variants, we live in a world of many. There are oh, oh, million variants of Galaxy S10 you can choose from having comparable cameras. The Galaxy S10E , though not as premium as the Pixel 4, costs $ 750, has extended storage, and has two cameras. And here is the OnePlus 7T dark horse ($ 649 on Amazon) .

To compensate for the limited amount of memory, Google provides banking services to Pixel owners using Google Photos to store photos and videos. But if you look like me and you like storage on board, syncing all your stuff with the cloud is not attractive. Google has also changed its policy to prevent Pixel 4 users from having unlimited photo storage in their original quality. Instead, you can download high quality content that has less resolution with fewer details.

If you enjoy using Google Photos and have a budget, think of the Pixel 4. It has great signature software with Android 10 updates, and you’ll have one of the best cameras. But if you want to get the most for your money, consider it Galaxy S10 , the Note 10 , the OnePlus 7T or even at a discount Pixel 3 from last year. All these phones have a longer battery life than the Pixel 4 and the Pixel 3 costs only $499 , has a fantastic camera and can be updated to Android 10.

Pixel 4 and 4 XL: Industrially chic in glowing orange

Let’s delve into the comparison of Pixel 4: Here what distinguishes Pixel 4 from last year’s Pixel 3 as it accumulates to the Galaxy Note 10 and all the Pixel 4 specifications compared to iPhone 11, Galaxy S10E and OnePlus 7T .

Update, Nov. 1: Adds battery test results and final evaluation.

Pixel 4 gets two rear cameras, astrophotography

The most striking feature of the Pixel 3 was its excellent camera, and we were amazed at how well it took beautiful photos using only one rear camera at a time when its competitors needed two or more. On the Pixel 4, however, Google added a second camera (though it’s still smaller than other phones that have three or even four rear cameras). Google says it was done with a camera, not wide-angle, because it thought it was more important to scale. The iPhone 11 Pro The Huawei Mate 30 and Note 10 phones have wide-angle cameras that can hold more content in each frame.

The second telephoto lens allows the camera to take better portrait shots. It also does a better job of leveling complex areas such as hair and fur than before. (A troublesome photo of me, taken on a particularly windy day, though it had spotty spots.) You can also take portraits from now on.

The camera’s HDR Plus feature, which collects multiple images to produce a single image with the best exposure, can be viewed in real time. This is useful, but I don’t like how you can’t turn off HDR at all. I’m not always a fan of the effect on any phone really, because the photos may look unrealistic or over-processed. Although I can customize images with two new sliders for shadows and light tones, I do not intuitively understand how to use these sliders for the effect I want. I often just randomly played around with the sliders, not really knowing what the photo would look like.

Pixel’s low-light mode, known as Night Sight, continues to impress, brightening and amplifying dark scenes. It’s so good that you can use the Pixel 4 to photograph the starry sky – a process that usually requires a DSLR, tripod and a lot of patience . I couldn’t check the astrophotography mode because I was in New York and couldn’t get to the dark area to take pictures of the star, but I included a shot taken by my colleague Juan Garzon. The photo is very impressive considering that the phone can generally shoot starlight. Please refer back to CNET for more details on this in the coming days. Stars aside, the Pixel 4’s low light mode still amazes me every time I push downhill.

Pictures from the Pixel 4’s camera

Pixel 4 takes sharp and vivid photos with great contrast. The combination of camera and digital camera zoom works great and I was able to take long shots of subjects that were very far away. Although there were still digital artifacts on the scaled images, it was astonishing how clear the objects were. The white balance control camera is also point-blank: Pictures taken in yellow, warm light will appear as if they were taken in white light. For now, the Pixel 4 has one of my favorite cameras that can be used on any phone.

The photos taken on the front camera were not as sharp and sharp as those on the back shooting, and in low light the faces were blurred at the edges. But with enough light, the drawings were sharp and the colors were true to life.

One small quibble – Google has hidden basic photo settings such as flash and timer, so now you need to click the extra arrow in the camera interface to call these tools. Although this is an interface interface, it seems to me that it is annoying to click on something as basic as a flash.

Though there are some patchy areas around Jessica’s hair, portrait mode still did a good job handling the blur effect.

Pixel 4 and Android 10 Face Unlock Work

Equipped with a Google touchscreen chip called Soli, the Pixel 4 lets you do a few new things, such as using your face to authorize digital payments and navigate your phone with contactless gestures. It the feature set is called Motion Sense , and you can turn it on in Settings.

Motion Sense uses radars to track movement, and it can feel your hand when you reach for your phone to unlock it (face unlocking is done with an infrared camera, like Face ID on an iPhone). This combination of preparation and subsequent firing makes the face unlock faster. I don’t need to touch the screen or push any buttons beforehand, and I don’t need to swipe after using the phone. This is just one free, cohesive process.

Google’s face unlock uses a combination of radar and infrared sensors.

Sarah Tew

Please note that while face unlocking is secure enough to authorize digital payments, it is not 100% infallible. Google recognizes that someone similar to you, such as a twin, can unlock your phone. Face unlock also works with your eyes closed or when you are sleeping, which is a big vulnerability. (Many more serious scenarios are possible, but I can already imagine that my friends will be able to cheat on my phone if I am caught napping.) The iPhone face ID only works if my eyes are open and at one. users make the same choice, according to the BBC. But the company seems to have removed this option, and no one knows why. (Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but has promised to fix the patch problem .)

Waving her hand to skip songs, timers and anxiety initially felt tricky, and it reminded me of the awful beak-shaped doll that I had to do with my hand to close the programs when the LG G8 ThinQ ($ 847 at Walmart) used similar technologies. But since Motion Sense responds more to subtle hand movements than the G8, this feature works surprisingly effortlessly. I also liked that the sounds of the alarm went off as I reached for a phone that was intuitive and less destructive.

The Pixel 4 runs Android 10 and comes with dark mode, new gestures for navigation, and an updated faster Google Assistant. The phone has a security program and in some countries this program detects car crashes and automatically calls 911 if you are injured.

One application that I find particularly useful as a reporter is the voice recorder. Addition live broadcast while recording audio . The Pixel 4 can also stream live signature captions from your phone. For example, I recorded a quick video of myself when I was talking, and when I played this video with a live caption, I could see exactly what I said, written out. This is not perfect, but it comes out to about 95% of things. It’s also relatively fast and works offline.

Pixel 4 Design: Notable camera snapshot and silky display

The Pixel 4 is like turning your phone into a casual Friday. I know the phone packs the equipment to do its job, but since it doesn’t have the lavish glass trim on the iPhone 11 or Galaxy S10, it doesn’t look as elegant. Instead, the informality of the Pixel 4 (like the pops of color in the power button or matte finish that I couldn’t stop chatting with a clearly white model) makes it rather “fun”. As a little person with disappointing tiny jeans pockets, I found the Pixel 4 small and comfortable to hold. The Pixel 4 XL is lightweight compared to other phones in its size. The phones are rated IP68 for water resistance.

The Pixel 4 XL has thick bezels compared to the Note 10 Plus.

Sarah Tew

Google ended up with two toned backs on both phones and removed the notch on the Pixel 4 XL. In its place is the top frame with the base. This makes the phone look dated compared to the thinly-numbered iPhone 11 and Galaxy S10, which have a removable camera and a rotary camera, but it’s nice to watch video or play games on a straight, uninterrupted display.

Speaking of the screen, the Pixel 4 display is updated at 90 times per second, while most phones are updated at 60 times per second. This is not entirely new – OnePlus 7T and Razer Phone 2 ($ 408 on Amazon) have 90 Hz and 120 Hz respectively. But more often than not, things like playing games and scrolling through web pages and apps feel fluid, as if Pixel is spring. I hope more phones will accept this.

Please note that the Pixel 4 does not have any type of headphone or key for its USB-C port. Considering the high price of the phone and the fact that the Pixel 3 came with one, this is a serious draw.

One thing I’m not a fan of is the big square bang of the camera on the back. They all caught their eye when Google released the first Pixel 4 images, and it’s still one of the first things people notice when I show them my phone (again, I had a white version, so the black camera strike stood out more). It’s about the size of the postage stamp and it’s so big that when I push the phone while it’s on my back, I feel like it’s coming back and forth. It’s not an intruder, but it’s ugly, and I think that managing Samsung’s multiple rear cameras on Galaxy S10 phones is the most enjoyable.

Pixel 4 performance and battery

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 processor runs on Pixel 4. Although not as advanced as the Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset (which is almost identical but aimed at improving mobile gaming and, for example, the OnePlus 7T), it had no problems with daily tasks. , such as launching the camera, opening applications, and receiving audio. The Pixel 4 also felt faster than the Pixel 3 when taking night-vision and portrait shots and launching a front-facing camera flash. On paper, benchmark results are comparable to other Android phones. The OnePlus 7T was slightly ahead of the Pixel 4 in every test, but the iPhone 11 bypassed everything. (Note: Galaxy S10 Plus ($ 800 on Amazon) and S10E have the same processor. We also failed to launch 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited on OnePlus 7T.)

But there were a few times when I had to wait for a shot or two after I took a portrait shot for the camera to activate its shutter button again. The Pixel 4 also warms up quickly after I took out my camera for a half hour or so. It was hectic, but it didn’t seem to affect performance.

As for the battery, the Pixel 4 anecdotally lasted a day without charge. But the battery discharges noticeably faster than other premium phones I’ve worked on lately. For example, using my phone all day with medium to high usage, for example, I was less than 50%, and once I noticed that the battery was running out of standby for 30 minutes.

During our tests on the battery for continuous video playback in Pixel 4 airplane mode, it took an average of only 10 hours. Considering that the Pixel 3 lasted 15 hours last year, the iPhone 11 lasted about 15.5 hours, and the Note 10 lasted a whopping 18 hours, which is on average compared to others.

Pixel 4 vs Competition

Pixel 4 vs Pixel 3: At a discounted price of $ 500, the Pixel 3 has many things, much less for the Pixel 4, including online software updates (including Android 10), waterproof, and a camera that still weighs in 2019. Plus, if you buy Pixel 3, you’ll get unlimited photos in original quality by January 31, 2022.

Pixel 4 vs Galaxy S10 or Note 10: With its stylish design, stunning cameras and monster battery life, the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 are two reliable alternatives to the Pixel 4. Priced at $ 900 and $ 949, they can start out more expensive than the Pixel 4. But they have more storage, two-way charging and , in the case of Note 10, a reasonable S Pen inside.

Pixel 4 vs OnePlus 7T: Like the Pixel 3, the OnePlus 7T works with Android 10 outside the box and has a 90 Hz spring display. It also has three rear cameras (telephoto and wide) that can take great pictures and great battery life (over 16 hours in our tests). But the real kicker is that it only costs $ 599 – up from 128GB.

Pixel 4 vs iPhone 11: If you’re an OS agnostic, the Pixel 4 and iPhone 11 offer great dual cameras (and nasty camera bumps!), Wireless charging and face unlocking. The iPhone 11, however, is cheaper and has a 256GB model if you’re curious to have even more space.
