Is Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP-HC (24-inch) useful for office

The Good Four-way adjustable stand; wide array of video inputs; USB 2.0 ports and media card reader; strong quality of films and games.

The Bad Non-intuitive on-screen navigation; static image quality is not surprising.

The Bottom Line Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP-HC Widescreen Monitor gives you flexibility in data entry, high quality motion pictures and many other features that will make you happy as a digital entertainment display. It is not as strong as we would like with still images, but this display is not so good for demanding image and graphic professionals.

Dell’s UltraSharp 2407LCD-HC is basically the same 24-inch widescreen monitor we reviewed from Dell a year ago, with only an improved color range displayed. We called this old Dell display the best in its class. This new one is gaining similar admiration, though we found that the image quality was less impressive for still images than for video and games. A serious photo editor may not consider consumer-level LCDs anyway. The rest of us may think that this $ 670 LCD not only works as a multimedia display but also has many useful features.

The UltraSharp base frame and stand remain the same as they have been for the past two years. It’s a pretty clean design that doesn’t have the aesthetic polish of an Apple display, but it’s suitable for display in any environment. The screen is easy to attach and detach, and the stand gives you just as much adjustability as the last 24-inch (and much larger than any Apple monitor) NEC, including tilt, rotate, up and down, and 90 degree rotation. switch to portrait mode.

The NEC display has earned several design points for a simple on-screen menu, made possible by the small joystick next to the power button. Dell’s new UltraSharp doesn’t get that much. There are all the options that you expect to find, including three presets for multimedia, games, and desktops, but the choices and navigation are not intuitive overall. Dell also does not offer software to integrate the monitor controls with your Windows display settings, a feature of NEC that we appreciated.

Manufacturer Specifications
Resolution: 1 920 x 1200
Dot pitch: 0.27mm
Pixel Response Rate: 6ms
HDCP compliant: Yes
Viewing angle: 178 degrees horizontally, 178 degrees vertically
Connections: DVI, VGA, S-Video, composite video, component video
Cables included: VGA, DVI

That’s where the Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP-HC shines. As we have listed in the specifications above, Dell includes almost all kinds of PCs and video inputs that you can imagine on this display, with the only exception being HDMI. There is no doubt that you may want to connect an HDMI-only device to this monitor, but you can always use a DVI-HDMI adapter.

The speakers lack the speakers, though Dell is offering the Dell SoundBar for $ 35. This set of encapsulated speakers is placed at the bottom of the screen and provides 10W stereo output. But even if it doesn’t have audio output, thanks to its large screen, high resolution and HDCP compatibility, you can still consider using a Dell display to watch movies in the den or bedroom. You just need a separate set of speakers from your video source.

Dell also makes great use of the capabilities of the USB monitor downstream. In addition to the four USB 2.0 ports, Dell also includes 9-in-2 media card slot sets. Built-in digital camera data card slots allow you to keep your desktop away from view. These slots also fill the gap if you have a desktop that does not have a media card reader (aka Mac owners).

Finally, the UltraSharp 2407WFP-HC includes both image and image capabilities. With all this screen real estate, it’s easy to imagine these features that come in handy. The screen will not automatically switch the aspect ratio when you turn to portrait mode, so you will still need to change this manually in your video driver software.

Compared to the 24-inch Gateway LCD and the more expensive NEC, the Dell UltraSharp has remained very competitive in our image quality tests. It tied the gateway to overall quality and lagged only a very small number behind NEC. Digging deeper into the test results, we found that the Dell UltraSharp was really too sharp and as good overall as the more expensive NEC. We were also very pleased with the color quality, especially during oursWorld of Warcraft, Kill Bill (Vol. 1)Standard definition DVD andSwordfish Blu-ray tests.

Our main complaints were that its gray scale did not fit very bright white and very dark black, and overall scaling between shades of gray lacked the intensity of the gateway and NEC displays. We also found a lack of static color intensity. This leads us to the conclusion that we like this monitor a lot more for its moving image capabilities than for editing photos or other tasks where it takes a long time to look at still images.
