The Bad The build quality of the laptop is not good, and some may be disappointed with the color performance of the display.

The Bottom Line Pure and simple, the Acer Nitro 5 is just a good bargain with great mobile gaming performance at a bargain-friendly price.

Only a couple of years ago, spending less than $ 800 on a gaming laptop is not very far. Of course, you can get discrete graphics, but the laptop will still be underused by the time you can’t really enjoy playing the latest games. Nitro 5 Acer is proof that the days are in the back.

While you can certainly do better by spending more money, the Nitro 5 can be priced at a bargain, currently as low as $ 600, with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 or 1050Ti graphics strong enough to play current games at medium and high level detailed settings at full resolution of 1,920×1,080-pixels on the laptop display. This is great performance for not so much money (as still are gaming laptops), and although there are several angles, you are still ahead.

The 15.6-inch laptop debuted just over a year ago, but Acer continues to keep it fresh with the help of new Intel and AMD processors. You can still find configurations with seventh-generation Intel processors inside, but you can also find them with eight-generation Intel Core i5-8300H or AMD FX-9830P processors, starting at $ 750 in the US or £ 900 in the UK. It is available in Australia with Intel’s new i7-8750H hexagonal processor, which starts at $ 2,000 (though this processor pushes it out of “lucrative” territory).

The look of the Nitro 5 is slightly understated for a gaming laptop – no large emblems or multicolored LEDs – but the stylized cooling vents and red glowing keyboard are just enough to keep it from confusing for a quiet business laptop. The keyboard is spacious with a satisfying feel, and with the monochrome red backlight the WASD keys are boldly outlined in red. There’s also a small digital playground.

The touchpad does the job: it’s smooth, responsive and supports all Windows 10 multi-touch. However, this is a click, so there are no left and right mouse buttons, and there are many flexible bodies around and around, making the whole thing fun. The same goes for the display case and hinges, which simply twist, bend and bend. It doesn’t affect performance, but if you’re usually careless with your electronics, it’s something to remember.

Plentiful ports for turning this laptop into a desktop replacement.

At 1.1 inches thick (28 mm) and about 6 pounds (2.7 kg), the Nitro 5 is not very comfortable for travel, but at least you have the option. If you consider this a desktop replacement, you should be very pleased with its range of ports.

  • USB 3.1 Type-C (Gen 1)
  • Two USB 2.0 Type-A’s
  • One USB 3.0 Type-A
  • SD card slot
  • HDMI out
  • Headphone / microphone jack
  • Gigabit Ethernet

There is no built-in optical drive, but with the connection options here, you can easily connect an external drive, along with a keyboard, mouse and external display. Acer’s full HD IPS panel offers good viewing angles, though its colors look a bit muted. Considering the price of the system, it’s goodbye, but keep in mind it’s the same display whether you’re paying $ 600 or $ 800 or more, depending on the components inside.

The speakers in Nitro 5 are particularly good. Although you will have a better experience with external speakers or a good headset, they do not seem slim and flashy. Gunfights and explosions sound full with a fair amount of bass and dialogue.

Acer offers many configurations of Nitro 5, with prices ranging from $ 750 to $ 1,100. Frankly speaking, the testing I tested is best for money with $ 800, but at the time of this review it was $ 680. More expensive configurations return to the seventh-generation Intel i7-7700HQ processor and add more memory and / or memory. Regardless of the Intel processor used, you will find a choice of either an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 or 1050Ti graphics chip. Acer also sells the AMD configuration for $ 750 with the Radeon RX 550 graphics.

There aren’t many differences in the performance of the 1050 and 1050Ti, but the latter will give you a little more room for future games. As for storage and storage, you have access to both through the bottom. You can easily add a 2.5-inch hard drive or other memory stick (the former seems to be a must-have for SSD gaming). SSD M.2 is also available, you just need to remove the entire bottom cover to get to it.

Both memory and storage can be added through bottom panels.

The full resolution of 1 920×180 pixels and settings for high-end, older games such as BioShock Infinite and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided went smoothly, although the latter was supposed to be more enjoyable to dial back to average. The same goes for Battlefield 1, which has taxed and cooled the system to a high level. The combo of components is enough to launch Oculus Rift or HTC Vive and any of them Windows Mixed Reality headsets . Sessions of PUBG and Fortnite were also fast and fun, so if you’re just looking for a cheap PC to take breaks in your work or study days, this Acer might be perfect.

You can’t go too far from the socket. In our streaming video test, it worked for 5 hours and 33 minutes, which is good enough for a gaming laptop but not great for general use. And in fact, battery-only games won’t go beyond two hours.

No unnecessary games

Acer Nitro 5 should be a delight for hunters. With many connectivity options, you can easily plug in your keyboard, mouse, speakers and external display and use it as your desktop, but still have good mobile gaming performance when you want it. Its handling and finish may not be top-notch, but not everyone cares, especially if you are destined to spend 90 percent of your time sitting at a desk in your home or office. It’s just a good deal, clean and simple.
