The Good XYZprinting Da Vinci Jr. 3D Printer easy to set up and use, requires no calibration and is currently the cheapest 3D printer on the market.
The Bad The printer is relatively voluminous, given its small build platform. It uses XYZprinting branded supplies, and glue may be required to ensure high success.

Only $ 349, XYZprinting Da Vinci Jr. 3D Printer is the lowest 3D printer to date. (The official price for the UK is £ 299; XYZprinting announces that it will announce prices and availability for Australia at a later date, but the UK price turns to $ 580.)
But don’t be fooled by this low price – it’s one of the best-designed, easy-to-use 3D printers on the market. The machine does not require manual calibration and is ready to use right out of the box. I also encountered very few questions during my testing.
This is not perfect – the printer is only compatible with XYZPrint branded coils. It also has a small build platform, despite its large physical size, so you can’t use it to create large objects. I also needed to tweak it a bit before I could get a steady successful pace.
Most 3D printers start at $ 1,000 and can cost up to $ 5,000. And even then, they are not always as convenient to use and do not offer features as good as those of Da Vinci Jr.. By comparison, Da Vinci Jr. is an absolute steal for anyone who wants to enter the world. 3D printing.

No need for calibration, branding threads
Da Vinci Jr. is basically a smaller version of its all-in-one predecessor Da Vinci 1.0 AiO . The newer and smaller printer does not scan, but now it can print directly from the SD card, which its older brother does not have. The rest is very similar, from the setup process to the software, to the print speed and quality.
I managed to raise Da Vinci Jr. in 10 minutes, including the time it took to unlock him. The whole process was easy, but if you’ve never dealt with a 3D printer before and need help, there is a very well-illustrated step-by-step guide. The 3D printer outside the box is assembled and almost ready to use. All you have to do is remove the packing material, install the threaded reel and attach it. To my pleasant surprise, the printer did not require manual calibration before use.
In 3D printing, calibration (also known as alignment or alignment) is a complex process when you need to make sure that the entire surface of the print platform is at a constant and perfect distance from the printhead tip. If you do not do this correctly, the printer will not be able to create an object that accurately displays the 3D model. Many printers require manual calibration before they can make their first print. In my experience, calibration is the biggest obstacle you need to overcome when you first enter the world of 3D printing.
You also need other printers to calibrate, such as Cel Robox , the Ultimaker 2 or the Monoprice Dual Extrusion before you can truly understand how enjoyable it is to use Da Vinci Jr.
Da Vinci Jr. uses branded yarns that are raw materials for 3D printing, as well as ink cartridges for inkjet printers. They come in many colors and are mostly easy to melt, quickly configuring the plastic threads that feed through the printhead nozzles while printing. Most 3D printers come in open reels. In the case of Da Vinci Jr, the coil itself has a small chip, and according to XYZprinting data, it connects to the printer via NFC to inform the printer about the type of thread used, its color and method left a lot. The printer will not work with any coils other than those used for this model.
The requirement for branded filament coils means that you can only get them from XYZprinting and may have to pay a higher price than the common filament. But in return, they make life easier because you don’t have to manually change the printer settings to match the type of thread. In the case of Da Vinci Jr, you have no choice. At the time of this review, white is the only color available. But the company says other colors will be available soon. Each coil contains about 1.3 pounds (600 grams) of thread and costs anywhere from $ 25 to $ 30 each.
Note that custom threads are a new trend in 3D printing. It seems that more and more manufacturers are taking this route: 3D systems, for example Cube 3 , and Sel from Robox . In the future, I suspect that most sellers will make their own threads for their printers.
Large physical size, small construction platform
In my experience, XYZprinting 3D printers tend to have a small ratio of the build platform (aka print bed) to the physical size. In other words, the large physical size of the printer does not necessarily mean that you can print proportionally large objects with them.
Da Vinci Jr. is a prime example of this. Designed for entry level compact printer, the machine is actually much smaller than the Da Vinci AiO. However, at 16.5x15x17 inches (420 by 380 by 430 mm), it is still quite large, much larger than the other printers I’ve worked with. Despite this, it has a modest assembly platform that can make objects only 5.9 inches in cube (150 mm). For comparison 3D Systems Cube 3 , much smaller in size, but has a larger 6-inch cube platform.
Although it is large, Da Vinci Jr. is actually very light, weighing only 26 pounds (12 kg). It just has a lot of empty space.
The built-in printer layer is not heated or removed. Instead, the package includes a set of three reusable bed sheets that cover the top of the assembly platform during use. You can buy more of these ribbons when they are out, or just use an adhesive tape. These tapes are designed to keep the object under construction from moving (though they did not work well; more on this below).

Easy-to-use software, card slot support
On the front of the Da Vinci Jr. is a 2.6-inch, four-line LCD screen with six navigation buttons to control the machine. These buttons control the printer, including loading and unloading the thread, viewing the status of the printer, and even initiating a print job without the need for a computer.
The last option is available because the printer has an SD card slot near the screen. A 4GB card is included with the printer, which includes a PDF setup guide and a 3D test model, but you can use any SD card with the printer if it is formatted in FAT 32. After 3D model files have been uploaded to the map, the printer can print directly from it.
On the right, the printer has a standard USB port to connect to your computer using the included standard USB 2.0 cable. Print can be selected from an SD card or from a computer.
For the latter, you first need download (registration required) and install the XYZWare software (Windows and Mac), which took me only a few minutes. Software is one of the most user-friendly 3D printers. Its interface is made up of large and clear buttons that allow you to import and process 3D object files. You can make all the standard settings, including resizing a 3D object (zooming); setting print quality between normal, good (default), or excellent; adjusting the filling level (hollow or solid) and the like. You can also add multiple 3D model files to one print job if they do not exceed the maximum print volume.
With the software, you can print directly to the printer or save the model on an SD card. If you decide to print directly, depending on the size and complexity of the 3D model, it takes a few seconds to several minutes to transfer the software to the printer. The printer can then print on its own without connecting to a computer.
As for what to print, here is a huge collection of free 3D objects Thingiverse that you can use, or you can do on your own using free software such as SketchUp or Autodesk 123D. XYZprinting is also great 3D model file collection choose from you for free.
Da Vinci Jr. is a FFF printer. This means that during a print job, the print head of the printer pulls a thread of thread, melts the plastic and squeezes it onto the platform under the nozzle. The platform gradually lowers as the printed object gets higher and the print head moves around, depending on the width and shape of the object. As the extruded plastic piles top, layer by layer, they freeze very quickly and will slowly form the object after a while. This process is also often referred to as fused deposition modeling (FDM); is a modern 3D printing technology used by most consumers of 3D printers.
As a single extruder, Da Vinci Jr. can only work with one thread source at a time. This means that you can only print printers of the same color using the printer. But you can always paint the finished item in any color you like later.
In my testing, the printer showed the same print speed as most other 3D printers. Depending on the size of the object and the level of quality setting, it can take up to half an hour to print more than 10 hours. For example, the standard iPhone 5S case took about an hour to complete the “good” quality setting. Most of the work I tried to do with the printer actually took between 5 and 10 hours.
And sometimes they didn’t even finish – at first I came across a few bad prints. As it turned out, the surface of the print pattern, even if covered with the provided bedding tape, was not sticky enough to always hold the object under construction, especially when it gets larger and taller. As soon as she slipped out of print, the print job would fail. I was able to fix this by covering the surface of the printing platform with a thin layer of school glue. Please note that Da Vinci Jr. does not contain any glue (as some other printers do), but with 3D printing the glue becomes very convenient not only for the printing process itself, but also for other things such as holding pieces of an object together.
After this was disassembled, the printer worked reliably and I was able to make each object seamless. I was also able to print about half a dozen large objects (each with at least one maximum size) using one coil of thread at the default fill level (10 percent). Note that the higher the fill level and the higher the quality, the more threads will be used for each object.
Da Vinci Jr. has a lot going for it. Firstly, pricing: for the first time, for only $ 349 or £ 299, we have a 3D printer that costs about the same as a high-end inkjet printer. Second, it’s easy to use: the fact that you don’t need to manually calibrate makes it much more user-friendly than any printer that needs calibration. Finally, Da Vinci Jr.’s print quality and speed were extremely wonderful, especially considering the cost.
All these factors make the use of branded threads and the need for glue to consistently work with very minor disadvantages. Also note that although the print platform of the printer is smaller than other printers, its actual 5.9 cubic inches is quite large. Most of the time, you print objects much less than this. Still, it is possible to make a larger object by printing it into pieces and folding them later.
Having said that, Da Vinci Jr. is one of my favorite printers and is a great thing for anyone interested in getting started with 3D printing.
