Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact specs

The Good The Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact is a mini flagship phone that you can actually use with one hand. Strong technical features minimize compromises.

The Bad The design is dim, like a sidewalk, has no headphone jack, and the front camera is nothing to grasp.

The Bottom Line The efficiency and reach of the Sony XZ2 Compact at the phone level allows you to get the phone if you want something smaller that won’t sting for the sake.

Sony XZ2 Compact is a rare beast. It’s the absolute power of a phone, with a crackling camera and a great screen, but with only a 5-inch screen it fits comfortably in your palm.

A small supercharged phone is something that no other Android manufacturer offers. And at 650, 529 pounds, or $ 830, that’s not too bad considering Samsung Galaxy S9 will refund you $ 720 to $ 800 and iPhone X starts at $999.

Whether the price is important or not, the fact remains that it is in fact the only flagship flagship Android phone. Apple makes its own smaller phone – its own iPhone SE , and rumors iPhone SE2 that could potentially come out later this year – which is the only other compact phone. If you do not want to switch to Apple and you do not fit into the XZ2 Compact, you will need to work on those finger exercises as they will have to stretch on a larger phone.

The powerful, pocketable Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact

While other flagships seem to be bent on stretching their thumbs beyond what is physically possible – I’m looking at you, the 6.3-inch Galaxy Note 8 – The 5-inch XZ2 Compact is tiny in comparison. This smaller size makes it easy to hold and use with one hand and easily slip into the pocket of even the most sophisticated jeans.

The display is larger than the 4.6-inch on the previous Compact, but the tiny bezels around it meant that the body didn’t have to expand to accommodate it. It is also waterproof, and although its polycarbonate construction makes it yawn easy, especially in the somber black version I reviewed, it feels quite sturdy. Unfortunately, Sony has sacrificed a Compact headphone jack, so you will need to buy a wireless headset or use a set of supplied keys in the box if you want to use your favorite pair of headphones or jars.

Like the hamster that swallowed a fusion reactor, the XZ2 Compact is a tiny thing that is gaining ground. Running the Qualcomm 845 processor, it was easy to work with in games, photo editing, and gave some mischievous points on our test benchmark – along with Galaxy S9 Plus and comfortable to beat Google Pixel 2 . There is nothing to throw on a bigger phone that Compact is also not happy to eat.

Xperia XZ2 Compact camera performance

The camera also produces great performance. Outdoor shooting is bright, well-sharpened with a 19-megapixel sensor. There is no dual zoom camera, black and white, or proper blurring of the portrait, so it’s not as full as the S9 Plus or Huawei P20 . It does take great shots, but there is a super-slow motion mode that captures 960 frames per second in full HD – better quality than slow motion in the Galaxy S9.

Selfies from the front 5MP camera are not as crisp as those on competing phones (as one might expect given the relatively low resolution), but it’s good enough to post Instagram-themed holiday selfies. It shoots video in 4K and can take slow motion at 960 frames per second in full HD, once boosting the Galaxy S9, which only shoots slow-mo at 720p.

Xperia XZ2 Compact battery life

Testing your phone’s battery was a difficult task. A few copies of our standard battery drain test (we record video in airplane mode), the Compact has reached a time when striking from 17 hours to just 9 hours on two separate viewing units. No phone is consistent with the results, and it’s hard to say why.

After observing your phone’s battery discharge every day, Compact’s battery life is best described as “fair”. Since the day of use, which includes some photography, podcast streaming, some games and a little email (which I consider to be “normal” use on average), the battery has dropped to around 20 percent. Although it may be time for another day, you won’t be reading much of the morning news, so it’s best to give this phone a full charge every night.

Is the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact the right phone for you?

The final thing we need to talk about is the 5-inch screen. The Xperia XZ2 resolution of 1260×1,080 pixels makes the display crisp and very bright. Sony boasts that it supports HDR, and of course the colors look bright and bright to my eye. But I would question the meaning of such a cinema in something so small. You hardly want to sit and enjoy the whole movie, and even if you do, no display technology will make you feel fully immersed.

And here’s the decision you need to make here – want a little phone or something you can enjoy movies and games with? If size is your main factor, go to the XZ2 Compact. Nothing comes close, because, well, most phones today are big, so you don’t have to close your eyes when reading the news, browsing through photos, or watching videos.

The only other small option to consider is the Apple iPhone SE SE, which is 4 inches even more comfortable for fingers than Sony. If you are in no hurry, then you should expect, as it is rumored that the iPhone SE2 will receive an update later this year. The Google Pixel 2 has a 5-inch display packaged in a slightly larger body than the XZ2 Compact, making it not as cardinal overall. It’s still smaller than the other flagships, and it has a great camera, though you’ll have to do waterproofing.

But if you can withstand the thumb further, the 5.8-inch Galaxy S9 is worth a look. Yes, it’s bigger and more expensive, but it’s much nicer, has a cracked camera in the front and back, and it won’t make you drop the headphone jack.
