Motorola Moto G5 Plus specs

Phones

The Good The splash-resistant Moto G5 Plus comes with an almost-replacement version of Android Nougat, a nice camera and video, and a metal body – and it’s extremely kind to your wallet.

The Bad There is no NFC on the American model, and the audio sounds uncomfortable because of the built-in speaker.

The Bottom Line With a long list of features and just a few you don’t have, there’s no better budget phone than the Motorola Moto G5 Plus.

Editor’s note, April 3: The Motorola Moto G7 The Moto G6 and G5 Plus are now available in several ways with increased battery life, a faster processor and a larger display. It costs $ 300, which is $ 50 more than last year’s Moto G6. While this is a significant increase, we believe that all the improvements are worth it. In fact, the G7 won the CNET Editor’s Choice Award. Verify our in-depth review of the Moto G7 is here .

What Motorola Moto G5 Plus does ($ 170 on Amazon) the best budget phone on the planet is that it mostly doesn’t feel like it. It looks, feels, and works like a much more accurate phone, which means that there are more wallet watchers.

It’s just a Moto that continues its tendency to provide more features than other inexpensive Android phones. This year’s model is improving compared to last year Moto G4 Plus with modern metal body; more storage; Android 7.0 Nougat; Google Assistant; new Moto gestures; NFC (UK model); a really good camera and 4K video: all remaining west is affordable (prices below).

But this is the Moto G generation ($ 449 on Amazon) The family also includes a little cheaper Moto G5 . Both phones have a similar metal body design, but the G5 has a smaller screen, half the memory and a weaker processor. The G5 is not available everywhere, for example, it will not be sold in the US. But even if it were, the G5 Plus would be the best price.

Many moto models

The Moto G5 Plus costs $ 229 (32GB), $ 299 (64GB) or £ 249 (32GB), depending on the model. Each model is slightly different when it comes to storage, RAM, and NFC. Motorola has not yet announced an Australian model, but the price in the US is turning into $ 300 and $ 390.

(US) $229 32GB 2GB No $185 + lock screen ads
(US) $299 64GB 4GB No $240 + lock screen ads

As the G5 Plus is a universal unlocked phone, it will work on all major US and UK carriers. If you are not sure, check with your carrier for compatibility. The dual SIM version of the Moto G5 Plus is only available in selected Latin America, Europe and Asia.

One touch magic navigation bar

One of my favorite features is the G5 Plus fingerprint sensor. It is in front of the display and works just like the Apple ID Touch ID on the iPhone. But Motorola has done something really cool: it has added a few quick gestures that turn the fingerprint sensor into a mini touchpad, a feature it calls the One Button Nav.

Once you’ve turned it on in the Moto app, tap the fingerprint sensor and it’ll bring you home. Swiping left shows your recent apps. If you swipe right, it swings back. If you press for a long time, you lock the phone, and when you press and hold, Google Assistant pops up.

It’s all pretty simple and intuitive, and I like that I didn’t have to do any unnecessary gestures about individual on-screen buttons. In fact, after using the Moto G5 Plus, it was hard not to instinctively try Moto shortcuts on other phones.

The Motorola Moto G5 Plus ventures out

Cheerful performances around the world

Moto G5 Plus has a 2GHz octane Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, which is also inside Moto Z Play . My review machine had 4GB of RAM (some have 2GB or 3GB). The G5 Plus supports 2.4GHz + 5GHz Wi-Fi. The phone was fast and responsive to use. The camera was cheerful playing such games Super Mario Run was even, and social media apps like Instagram and Snapchat worked without an icon – even when adding filters.

In our test of merging video batteries with a cyclic video battery, it lasted 13 hours and 22 minutes: 2 minutes longer than last year Moto G4 (13 hours 20 minutes) and 1 minute longer than the new premium LG G6 (13 hours 21 minutes).

Nice camera with a dark side

The camera uses a 12-megapixel sensor similar to a sensor Samsung Galaxy S7 and S8 (this is a two-pixel sensor if you move further) – it makes autofocus fast and accurate. In most situations, I received good clear photos. But in darker places, such as inside the bar, autofocus slowed, and I began to see noise in photography (blurred spots and splashes).

Take a look at some of the pictures I got from the Moto G5 Plus in the gallery below.

Low light photography is always a challenge, which is one reason why Apple and Samsung have optimized image stabilization in their flagship phones. The Moto G5 Plus does not. Overall image quality is still very good compared to other entry-level and mid-range phones.

The video on the Moto G5 Plus is also good. Digital stabilization helps smooth out small jitter and you can shoot either HD or 4K video – and good results. The default HD video camera.

The 5 megapixel selfie camera has a wide-angle lens with a beauty mode that smooths out your features and hides flaws – if you get into things like this (this is typical for Android phones). The images are nice and my skin has never looked so young!

Times when it felt like a budget phone

The Moto G5 Plus does a good job overall, but there is a trade-off between price and features. It should be added that neither of these is a deal breaker for me, but you should be aware of the disadvantages:

  • The US version does not have NFC (but in the UK)
  • The UK version only comes with 32GB of memory and 3GB of RAM (instead of 64GB and 4GB of RAM)
  • Music and audio with the built-in G5 Plus speaker sound subtle and subtle
  • There is no optical image stabilizer for the camera – which would really help in low light
  • The display worked well indoors and in direct sunlight, but the Adaptive brightness made the screen too bright inside, so I found this feature off

Moto G5 Plus compared to other phones

After all, I really like the Moto G5 Plus. I honestly don’t know about a phone that provides a better balance between features and cost.

Other competitors of the G5 Plus – Huawei Honor 6X ($ 256 on Amazon) and the Nokia 6 ($ 170 on Amazon) which may not be for sale in Australia. On paper, the Honor 6X gives the G5 Plus a run for its money, but until we finish testing, we can only compare the features:
