The Samsung LD220G is a multipurpose monitor that can be used as a standalone display or paired with a laptop as a satellite screen. The $ 230 monitor has a USB video connection, bypassing the video card. Unfortunately, the display has unstable configuration options, horrible gameplay features via USB, and dark screens are very obvious. If you’re looking for a shared monitor, the sleek design of the LD220G and the simple USB connection make it a good choice if you’re not a gamer. If you need a standalone 22-inch monitor, we recommend the AOC V22 Verfino or Asus VH235H. Both monitors work better, have more features, and cost the same or less than the LD220G.

Design and features
The 22-inch Samsung LD220G has a glossy black bezel and no less glossy screen. Panel 0.9 inches deep; however, the back of the display, which has backlighting, connection options and ventilation, extends 1.6 inches further, providing a full depth of monitor of up to 2.5 inches. The panel size is 20.3 inches wide. On the top, right, and left sides, the frame is 0.75 inches long and 1.6 inches below. The stand on the back of the display is more supportive by holding the monitor vertically. The stand features small thin wheels at the bottom that allow users to slide smoothly across the stand, tilting the screen back up to 25 degrees.

The monitor can be used either as a standalone display or as a companion display for a laptop. The monitor can be connected to the computer via a VGA port or with built-in DisplayLink technology via a USB port. If used as a companion display, it can be easily installed in expansion mode or mirror (cloning) through the DisplayLink toolbar. Sitting on the desk, the bottom of the screen is almost perfectly matched with our Lenovo ThinkPad T60. However, this may not always be perfect, depending on the size and design of the laptop you plan to use with it.

The screen array of display buttons at the bottom right of the bezel remains hidden until it is touched. Each screen menu button option – Menu, Up, Down, and Auto – glows orange when detected. Samsung uses a simple and limited on-screen menu for the LD220G interface. It has no contrast or color control; however, brightness control is available as the only configuration option. Five presets are included: Custom, Laptop, Internet, Movie and Dynamic Contrast. However, switching between preset modes only changes the brightness level for each of the five options.

16: 9 aspect ratio screen The Samsung LD220G has an output resolution of 1 920×180 pixels. The trend of 16: 9 monitors now covering the market has yielded many smaller monitors with higher resolutions than they could with the 16:10 aspect ratio. The 22: 16: 9 aspect ratio now has a potential built-in resolution of 1 920×1,080 (1080p) pixels as opposed to 1680×1,050 pixels.

We tested the Samsung LD220G with its USB connection in the default (default) settings. The display shows a composite score of 87 on CNET lab performance tests. The display rated the color tests well, and the fonts were sharp; However, there were some problems with our screen uniformity tests. In our test on the dark screen there was an obvious backlight, which was bleeding at the top and bottom edges of the screen. In tests with high contrast for flash and shade, which looks for light or dark shadows that delay static images in places where there are large contrast changes, we can easily see the tracking effect in the middle of the screen. The Samsung LD220G also had problems displaying dark – and not even dark – gray.

Samsung LD220G reached brightness at 235 cand. Per square meter (cd / m2), which is much smaller than Samsung’s stated maximum of 300 cd / m2.

In the previous Samsung LD220G movie program, we covered “Kill Bill. Volume 1” on DVD and several 1080p movie files from the WMV HD Showcase. Movies on the Samsung monitor looked good and displayed accurate colors, but the relatively low brightness of the display was created for a dim screen with subtle colors that lacked pop.

Unreal Tournament 3 and World of Warcraft looked decent at 1 920×180 pixels and showed no sign of ghosting; however, its video performance during USB rendering was extremely sluggish and shaky. While playing Unreal, there was a noticeable lag in the input, which was not a problem when going through VGA.

The optimum viewing angle for the monitor is usually directly in front, about a quarter of the screen down from the top. From this angle, you view the colors and gamut by destination. Most monitors are made for viewing only at this angle. The image quality at sub-optimal angle depends on the type of panel. The LD220G has a TN panel, which typically exhibits sharp color changes with an angle change. Not surprisingly, the LD220G screen becomes noticeably darker when viewed from below and too bright when viewed from above. On the sides, the text becomes indistinguishable about 45 degrees from the middle. Viewing images on this display from any angle other than the optimum is not recommended.

The Samsung LD220G’s power consumption tests on default / on mode gained 30.3W – more than the 27.31W AOC V22 Verfino and far less than the 39.58W Asus VH236H. Based on our formula, the LD220G will cost $ 10.36 per year to run – compared to $ 13.68 Asus per year and AOC $ 8.77 per year.
